Islamabad, February 12, 2019: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the country’s leading telecom and ICT services provider, has announced its financial results for the year ended December 31, 2018, at its Board of Directors’ meeting, held in Islamabad on February 12, 2019.
PTCL Group’s revenue for the year 2018 has grown YoY by 8% to Rs. 126.2 billion as a result of positive contribution by all group companies. PTCL Group’s revenue growth in the fourth quarter accelerated to 13% YoY. Ufone revenue has increased by 13% YoY, UBank, a microfinance banking subsidiary of PTCL, has shown significant growth of 64% in its revenue over last year. PTCL Group’s operating profit and net profit for the year have improved by 198% and 32% respectively. Like-for-like, net profit of PTCL Group is higher by 22% compared to last year.
PTCL revenue of Rs. 70.1 billion for the year is 0.7% higher than last year, with quarter 4 showing an accelerated growth of 3.4% YoY. In 2018, PTCL’s revenue has registered YoY growth for the first time since 2014:
In 2018, three quarters of PTCL’s revenue base has shown a growth over last year. PTCL’s flagship Fixed Broadband services posted revenue growth of 6.5% over 2017. For the 51 exchanges fully transformed to date under the network transformation program YoY revenue growth is even higher at 12.4%. Investment in transformation of network exchanges has resulted in enhancing customer experience by reducing network faults by 36% and repeat faults by 50%, along with providing higher bandwidths beyond 100Mbps, bundled with Triple Play services. To further enrich the product and services portfolio, PTCL has partnered with the global OTT players like Netflix, STARZ Play, icflix, etc. PTCL has also been recognized by Brand Finance as the ‘Fastest Growing Brand in Pakistan’.
Corporate business continues to perform strongly and has shown significant growth of 13% over last year by signing new customers in Managed Services and Cloud Infrastructure Services resulting in 154% and 188% growth respectively in these two segments.
Conversion of EVO customers to Charji/LTE have yielded positive results with YoY revenue growth in double digits, however, it has also resulted in higher subscriber acquisition cost as compared to last year. There is continued decline in domestic and international voice revenues due to increase in illegal/grey traffic termination, continued conversion of subscribers to OTT and cellular services, resulting in declining voice traffic volumes.
PTCL’s operating profit for the year is lower by 9%, compared to 2017 mainly due to increase in operating cost on account of currency devaluation and higher subscriber acquisition cost. Further, non-operating income has also declined due to reduced funds as compared to last year. Net Profit for the year is Rs. 7.4 billion which is 11% lower compared to last year as reported (and 8% lower if adjusted for one-offs), driven by lower operating profit and lower non-operating income.
In 2018, the financial strength of PTCL was acknowledged through an independent rating exercise as a result of which JCR-VIS has assigned PTCL a long-term rating of AAA which will enhance all stakeholders’ confidence in the long-term sustainability of the Company.
This year yet again, PTCL has inducted top 100 young engineers and business graduates under Summit Program 2018 from top institutions and universities across Pakistan, which would help in building future leadership. Thanks to its sustained high growth, Ubank has created more than 650 new positions during 2018, increasing its employee base from 1,321 to 1,980, where 9% of the total workforce comprises of women.
The CEO of PTCL, Dr. Daniel Ritz, has decided to leave PTCL for personal reasons upon completion of his 3-year contract on March 1, 2019, in order to re-unite with his family in Europe. The PTCL Board of Directors at its meeting today has appointed Rashid Khan, currently CEO of Ufone, to the post of CEO PTCL effective March 2, 2019, with an additional charge of CEO Ufone.
On the occasion, Dr. Ritz said, “It has been a privilege and an honor to lead PTCL and the PTCL Group through a period of significant transformation. I am proud of what we have achieved as a team and the results announced today with PTCL returning to top line growth for the first time after several years of revenue decline are a testimony to this.” The PTCL Board of Directors thanked Dr. Ritz for his exemplary leadership in the past three years and the associated business results. His decision to return to Europe to re-unite with his family is understandable.
Hatem Dowidar, CEO Etisalat International, commented, “Daniel has taken the helm of the company at a critical time where he has succeeded in laying the foundation for a future network, providing ultra-fast broadband to many areas with the biggest network modernization of PTCL in its history. Additionally, PTCL under his leadership, became active in Cloud computing, data centres and pushing forward the Digital Pakistan agenda”. Maroof Azfal, Chairman PTCL, added, “On behalf of Government of Pakistan, I would like to thank Daniel sincerely for his personal leadership and achievements in putting PTCL, an important national asset, back on the growth track.” Ends

The session featured the real life story of a Breast Cancer survivor, Mrs. Khanum Mumtaz Mirza, who is mother of a PTCL staff member. Mrs. Mirza talked about her journey of how she conquered the disease by undergoing the difficult process of diagnosis, treatment, surgery and post-operative care, along with the psychological repercussions of the disease.
The session also included a talk on the importance of early detection through self-examination in order to overcome the disease at an early stage, where chances of survival are relatively high. PTCL’s Senior Medical Officer, Dr. Asma Mahfooz explained the self-examination procedure and also answered questions from the audience. The session was appreciated by all audience members.
Showing solidarity to the cause, PTCL official logo was changed to pink on all social media forums, which will remain for the month of October. Besides, PTCL Headquarters in Islamabad was illuminated pink and staff members adorned the signature pink badge to pledge their support for this cause.
Hina Tasleem, GM HR Strategy and founder of The Pink Club at PTCL, stated, “Our main objective of starting ‘The Pink Club’ was to take initiatives and create awareness on the issues related to working women including health, welfare and safety at PTCL. By organizing such sessions, we ensure that our female employees remain updated and aware of pertinent health issues and measures to counter possible risks. Islamabad, October 22, 2018: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has been assigned initial long term entity rating of ‘AAA’ (Triple A) and short term rating of ‘A-1+’ (A-One Plus) by JCR-VIS Credit Rating Company Limited (JCR-VIS). The assigned ratings reflect PTCL’s leading market position, extensive network infrastructure, strong financial risk profile and adequate business risk profile.
Long term rating of AAA signifies highest credit quality with negligible risk factors being only slightly more than those for risk-free GoP’s debt. Short term rating of A-1+ signifies highest certainty of timely payment, healthy short term liquidity including internal operating factors and/or access to alternative sources of funds, and is below risk free GoP’s short term obligations. Outlook on the assigned ratings is ‘Stable’.
PTCL continues to enjoy market leadership position in most business segments that it operates. PTCL has a market share of 80% in the documented broadband segment, around 90% in the fixed line voice segment and around 30% in the wireless data segment. PTCL’s share in the IP Bandwidth market stands at around 60%. Despite risk of product substitution from CMOs (for fixed line voice segment) and competition from OTT apps (for international business), business risk profile is supported by healthy growth outlook for broadband and corporate services segment. The ratings incorporate PTCL's debt free balance sheet and abundant liquidity, important elements that provide the company with financial flexibility and support its rating.
According to JCR-VIS, revenues of the telecom sector in Pakistan have grown at a CAGR of 2.4% over the last 5 years. Moreover, with increase in number of subscribers, teledensity has increased to 73% while broadband penetration stood at 29% leaving room for significant demand growth.
Furthermore, JCR-VIS recent findings conclude that four Cellular mobile operators (CMOs) currently continue to dominate the market in Pakistan and generate around four-fifth of the total revenues. Data business remained the main driver of growth after voice business stagnation. CMOs continue to face pricing challenges in a competitive market as reflected by low average revenue per user (ARPU) vis-à-vis regional peers. The remaining one-fifth of the revenues is generated through Local Loop, Long Distance International and Wireless Local Loop segment.
JCR-VIS further validates that the Wireline broadband segment has significant room for growth given that only 5% of the household having access to Wireline broadband vis-à-vis 48.1% average in Asia and 18% in Africa. Given the focus on improving service quality and strengthening in network infrastructure through the network transformation project (NTP), PTCL is well positioned to benefit from growth potential in the broadband segment.

PTCL is proud of all the volunteers, who participated enthusiastically in this activity, and performed their civic duty diligently.

Being a significant part of PTCL’s culture of ‘One Family’, such events are arranged on a regular basis for employees that helps in team-building and also engage them in activities for their good health and well-being.”
Having a number of hiking trails in the capital, this is a popular activity in Islamabad, whereby a lot of trash and garbage gathers on the trails, which is damaging to the beauty of hiking trails and injurious to humans. The day-long hiking activity provided encouragement for PTCL employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It was motivating to see female employees actively participate alongside other team members to make our environment clean and eco-friendly.

Islamabad, October 11, 2018: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the Country’s leading telecom and ICT services provider has announced its financial results for the nine months’ period ended September 30, 2018 at its Board of Directors meeting held in Islamabad on October 11, 2018
PTCL Group’s revenue for the nine months’ period of 2018 has grown YoY by 6% to Rs. 93.21 billion as a result of positive contribution by all group companies. QoQ PTCL Group’s revenue has also grown by 11% during the third quarter of 2018. Ufone revenue has increased by 10% YoY, UBank, a microfinance banking subsidiary of PTCL, has shown significant growth of 65% in its revenue over same period of 2017. PTCL Group’s operating profit for the period improved by 65%, however its net profit declined by 26% mainly due to adverse impact of currency devaluation of Rs. 1.4 billion during current year and positive one-offs of Rs. 2.3 billion in last year. Like-for-like net profit of PTCL Group would have been higher by 27% compared to last year.
PTCL revenue for the nine months’ period has been stable overall at Rs 52.6 B YOY. PTCL’s flagship Fixed Broadband DSL service posted revenue growth of 7% over nine months of 2017. This includes the 31 exchanges fully transformed to date where DSL growth YOY was even higher at 15%. Corporate business continues to perform strongly and has shown significant growth of 14% over same period last year by signing new customers in Managed Services, Cloud Infrastructure Services, IT and Security Solutions. Conversion of EVO customers to Charji/LTE have yielded positive results with YoY revenue growth in double digits, however also resulted in higher subscriber acquisition cost as compared to same period last year. There is continued decline in domestic and international voice revenues due to increase in illegal/grey traffic termination, continued conversion of subscribers to OTT and cellular services resulting in declining voice traffic volumes. PTCL’s operating profit for the nine months’ period is lower by 17%, compared to the same period of 2017 mainly due to higher subscriber acquisition cost and Cable & Satellite/Network maintenance on account of currency devaluation. Further, non-operating income has also declined due to reduced funds as compared to last year. Net Profit for the period is Rs 4.8 B which is 26% lower compared to same period last year as reported (and 13% lower if adjusted for one-offs), driven by lower operating profit and lower non-operating income.
The financial strength of PTCL has recently been acknowledged through an independent rating exercise as a result of which JCR-VIS has assigned PTCL a long-term rating of AAA which will enhance stakeholders’ confidence.
During the 3rd quarter PTCL entered into a partnership with WWF Pakistan and committed to support plantation of 200,000 mangrove seeds in Balochistan. PTCL has also inducted top 100 young engineers and business graduates under Summit Programme 2018 from top institutions & universities across Pakistan which would help to develop future leadership.
Being a national carrier, PTCL also proudly launched a special Brand Campaign ‘Hum hain PTCL, hum hain Pakistan’ on Independence Day, which invoked patriotic emotions.
